Client assignment, stage one: For a book chapter of inspired and inspiring quotes, the author wanted a professorial type — a bit full of himself, certain of his carriage. At the pencil stage, I work and re-work (as needed) the basic character. I form notions of how I’ll ink the final art. I then scan the pencil drawing with a grayscale setting at 300ppi, and enlarge the resulting image so the character is 7 to 9 inches tall, a comfortable size for inking.
